More arrests following assault on taxi driver

A total of five men from the Swindon area have been arrested after a taxi driver was assaulted on the outskirts of Swindon.

The 28-year-old driver was assaulted by a group of men when he drove them from Cricklade Road/Poplar Avenue area to the Supermarine area on Sunday 8 October, around 11pm.

The men also took cash, keys and the driver's mobile phone.

A 54-year-old man was arrested on Monday 9 October and released under investigation.

Officers arrested a 35-year-old and 28-year-old man Tuesday 10 October on suspicion of robbery - both have been released under investigation.

Today, a 63-year-old man and a 40-year-old man were arrested on suspicion of robbery and are currently in custody.

Det Sgt Scott Anger said:  "We'd like to speak to anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the Supermarine or Cricklade Road area on this Sunday evening.

"Perhaps you noticed a confrontation between a taxi full of men and their driver near to the Supermarine Club or saw any other vehicles driving suspiciously, around 11pm on Sunday 8 October.

"We are continuing to thoroughly investigating this incident, which was an unprovoked attack on an innocent taxi driver just doing his job.

"If you can help with our enquiries in anyway, please come forward."
