New boundaries for Swindon Borough Council wards have been announced by the Local Government Boundary Commission.
The organisation has published final recommendations for changes in Swindon. It says residents should be represented by 57 councillors, the same number as at present.
There will be 25 wards, of which 10 will be three-councillor wards, 12 two-councillor wards, and three single-councillor wards. Most of the existing wards will change, but one will stay the same.
Professor Colin Mellors, Chair of the Commission, said: “We are very grateful to people in Swindon. We looked at all the views they gave us.
"They helped us improve our earlier proposals. We believe the new arrangements will deliver electoral fairness while maintaining local ties.”
The commission received 170 comments from people and organisations which helped decide the new wards. Changes in response to what local people said include:
- Proposed wards in South Swindon have been amended to reflect local community evidence
- The wards in the Rural North of the authority are amended based on submissions received from local parishes
The Commission has made further changes to its earlier proposals, and details can be found at https://www.lgbce.org.uk/all-reviews/swindon
The next stage in the process is for a draft order to be laid in Parliament. The changes will become law once Parliament approves them, and it is intended that the new arrangements are in place for the 2026 elections.
