Coinciding with Cervical Cancer Prevention week, GWH has released statistics showing a decline in the numbers of people coming forward for cervical screenings.
This week is Cervical Cancer Prevention Week, and GWH says it is particularly important this year due to what it deems a worrying drop in the number of people coming forward for cervical screening.
It reports that in Swindon, just 68.6 per cent of women and people with a cervix aged 25-49 took up the invitation for screening in 2020/21, meaning 13,690 did not take up their invite. This is a decline of 2 percent from 2019/20, with a similar trend said to be seen across the country.
Cervical screenings help to detect abnormalities within the cervix and prevent the potential development of cervical cancer.
Local people are being encouraged to contact their GP surgery to book an appointment. Patients of Moredon, Abbeymeads, Crossroads or Penhill surgeries can book through emailing [email protected].
GWH also run a dedicated staff screening clinic for staff to book in whilst they are at work.
