People who saw an evening screening of Joker: Folie a Deux last night were part of a melancholy moment in Swindon cinema history.
The film was the last to be screened at the Cineworld multiplex in Regent Circus.
The closure of the branch leaves the modern Regent Circus Development, opened a decade ago on the old Swindon College site, deserted part from Boom Battle Bar, Nando's and the Saturday Swindon & Wiltshire Pride Hub.
A number of other businesses have come and gone at the development, including a Morrisons supermarket which closed nearly five years ago and has stood empty and shuttered ever since.
The possible closure of the Regent Circus Cineworld was announced in late July.
The firm, which also has a multiplex at Shaw Ridge, said the site, along with others in various locations, had become commercially unviable.
The company itself, like much of the industry, has seen revenues hit by both the increasing dominance of streaming services and the legacy of the covid pandemic.
