No spike in coronavirus as massive increase in cases in Swindon and Wiltshire down to addition of historical data

Last night's figures released by Public Health England showed a massive increase of confirmed coronavirus cases from 469 to 736, an increase of 267, and Wiltshire increasing from 551 confirmed cases to 1,233, an increase of 682 confirmed cases. These figures are split by local authority.

According to Public Health England (PHE) this is because the number of cases being counted now includes Pillar Two, which is testing out in the wider community, when these figures did not include that tally before.

The health body explained that this is cumulative data taking into account all 'community' positive tests since the end of March.

They would like to reassure the local authorities of Swindon and Wiltshire that this is not because of a surge in cases in the community right now but it is now a truer picture of the amount of confirmed cases.

The latest figures were only released at 9.45pm last night and Swindon Link has only been able to get confirmation as to the reasons for the increase this morning from PHE.

Public Health England will be releasing a statement to this effect later.

UK-wide as of 9am on 2 July, there have been 9,914,663 tests, with 252,084 tests on 1 July.

283,757 people have tested positive. This is an increase of 576 from the day before.

As of 5pm on 1 July, of those tested positive for coronavirus, across all settings, 43,995 have died. This is an increase of 89 from the day before.
