Addressing the House of Commons, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced a slew of new coronavirus restrictions in England saying that the country is at a 'perilous turning point'.

With the Coronavirus Alert Level raised to four the Prime Minister has announced:

- Advising office workers to work from home wherever possible. In key public services and in all professions where home working is not possible, such as construction or retail, people should continue to attend their workplaces.

- The 10pm closure of pubs and restaurants as well as takeaway collections. Establishments will only be allowed to offer table service apart from when people are collecting a takeaway. The 10pm closure is the time establishments should shut their doors not the time they should call last orders.

- Retail staff, all users of taxis and private hire vehicles and staff and customers in indoor hospitality are now required to wear face coverings, except when seated at a table to eat or drink.

- All covid-secure guidelines in retail, leisure and tourism and other sectors will become legal obligations.

- From Monday, a maximum of 15 people will be able to attend wedding ceremonies and receptions, though up to 30 can still attend a funeral, as now.

- The rule of six is also extended to all adult indoor team sports. And from 1 October the plan to ease the rules of sports events will be suspended.

- The fine for not wearing a mask or breaking the rule of six, will double, to £200.

Mr Johnson said: "Unless we palpably make progress we should assume that the restrictions that I have announced will remain in place for perhaps six months."

The guidelines announced were just for England with the other devolved nations making their own announcements later.

The Prime Minister is expected to outline the new guidelines in a televised national address at 8pm this evening.
