MPs from across Wiltshire and Swindon have been given the latest update on the COVID-19 situation in the county thanks to the weekly briefing chaired by the Wiltshire and Swindon Police and Crime Commissioner.

Angus Macpherson was joined by Chief Constable Kier Pritchard and Tracey Cox, head of the local health Clinical Commissioning Group, during yesterday’s (28/05) virtual meeting, along with the county’s MPs and leaders of the two local authorities.

Angus said: “We've been running these meetings for two months now to continually ensure transparency and legitimacy within our police force during these unprecedented times, and they have been well received by those decision makers in our county.

“Leaders heard a report by the Chief Constable that the police are now seeing more public activity as government restrictions continue to change.  Kier Pritchard stated that Wiltshire Police's policy of Engaging, Explaining and Encouraging the public around the current rules remains and will do for the foreseeable future, with officers only Enforcing if absolutely necessary.  This was reflected in the latest figures (18-24 May) where no arrests for breaches in the COVID legislation had been made for the third week running.

"Linked to that, the police have reported that numbers of Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) issued continues to drop.

"The Chief Constable also highlighted that the latest scrutiny reports are now available on Wiltshire Police's website which breaks down the demographics of those who have received a FPN as well as outlining the number of tickets which have been rescinded.

“I was also pleased to be able to report that our partnerships with other key, local agencies continues to be strong with each supporting one another with the aim of protecting those most vulnerable in our communities.

"The feedback from our MPs and council leaders was again positive and I know they join me in commending the outstanding work being undertaken by officers, staff and volunteers as these unusual times continue."

The weekly briefings ensure elected members and council leaders have a good insight into the current policing response as the county continues to respond to the coronavirus situation.
