Boris Johnson backed his chief strategist saying that he acted 'responsibly, legally and with integrity' and that 'he 'followed the instincts of every father and every parent and I do not mark him down for that'.

The allegations concern reports that Dominic Cummings travelled more than 200 miles to his second home with his wife when they were meant to be isolating having come into contact with someone who had tested positive for coronavirus. According to Cummings this was done so they could be near the grandparents in case they both became incapacitated. A second set of allegations report that Cummings was seen at a popular tourist spot during this period when he was meant to be isolating.

The Prime Minister confirmed that England would be entering the second phase of the country returning from the lockdown with schools set to open for certain years across the country a week on Monday.

He also revealed today's set of numbers showing that there had been a rise of 118 coronavirus deaths reported in the last 24 hours bringing the total to 36,793..

As of 9am on 24 May, there have been 3,458,905 tests, with 110,401 tests on 23 May.

259,559 people have tested positive.

As of 5pm on 23 May, of those tested positive for coronavirus in the UK, 36,793 have died. This new figure includes deaths in all settings, not just in hospitals. The equivalent figure under the old measure would have been 29,754.
