A convicted fraudster who took out multiple fraudulent loans using stolen identities and forged payslips to gamble has been jailed again following an investigation by our Fraud team.

Daniel Robertson, 36, of Burbage Road, Penhill, appeared at Swindon Crown Court for sentencing after pleading guilty to two counts of fraud by false representation, two of breaching a Serious Crime Prevention Order, possession of articles for use in fraud and transferring criminal property.
He was jailed for 30 months.
He will also be subject to a five-year Serious Crime Prevention Order (SCPO) upon his release from prison, which will restrict the type and number of digital devices, phone numbers and bank accounts he can have.
It will also place restrictions on gambling and require him to sign up to a gambling support service.
In 2021, Robertson was released from prison after serving a four year sentence for his role in a substantial money laundering scheme.
As part of his release, he was made subject to a SCPO, which placed restrictions on his bank accounts and required him to notify Wiltshire Police of any new bank accounts set up or loans applied for.
Proactive checks by police fraud officers on whether Robertson was abiding by the order established that he had opened or attempted to open seven current accounts with various banks without notifying the police, and at one period held up to eight current accounts – breaching the conditions.
Police checks also established that in September 2024, Robertson – who had been unemployed since 2021 – attempted to use forged payslips for a gambling account to show a legitimate sources of funds.
His account had subsequently been locked.
In April 2026, while the investigation was ongoing, the police received a report from Great Western Credit Union that between February and April 2026, Robertson had made 13 fraudulent loan applications using stolen identities and forged bank statements.
Six of these were successful, with Robertson withdrawing around £23,000 into bank accounts in his own name and those of two associates, who are currently on police bail.
Following Robertson’s arrest, a USB was seized containing 120 fake identity documents relating to real individuals, including bank statements, council tax bills, payslips, and photographs of bank cards and driving licences.
He was subsequently charged with multiple offences.
Investigating officer DC Rachael Fairbairn, from the Fraud Team, said: “Robertson is a serial fraudster who has shown a continued commitment to criminal activity, repeatedly forging payslips and banking documents to fund a gambling habit.
“He has perpetually offended since being released from prison for a very similar offence, and I’d like to thank Great Western Credit Union for their swift support to identify his offending and prevent further fraud.
“Robertson’s offending isn’t victimless. There are real people who have had their identities stolen by Robertson and used for his offending.
“There are important steps you can take to protect yourself, such as shredding sensitive documents, using strong passwords, enabling two-factor authentication and regularly checking your credit report.”
The police have issued advice on how to avoid falling victim to fraud:
- Credit reference agencies TransUnion, Equifax, Experian, ClearScore offer a credit report checking service to alert people to any key changes on their credit file that could indicate potential fraudulent activity
- When moving house, redirect your mail and check your personal credit file for two to three months afterwards.
