Swindon Dementia Action Alliance - a group of local businesses and organisations - is planning a week of dementia-related activities to raise awareness and understanding.

The activities will take place from 16-20 May, during Dementia Action Week, an annual campaign hosted by the Alzheimer’s Society to raise awareness surrounding living with dementia.

This year's theme is ‘Act on dementia’ and the planned Swindon events are intended to provide a safe space for people living with dementia and their loved ones, allowing them to meet like-minded people and access the support and resources that they need.

The free activities include:

- Dementia Action Week Expo Event - Monday, 16 May, 10.30am-12.30pm, Swindon Central Library, with opportunities to meet local business and organisations who support people living with dementia, their carers and loved ones. There will be a public dementia friends training session open to all at 11am. Stands will include Swindon Carers Centre, Home Instead, Alzheimer’s Society and Herbert Protocol - a national information-pooling scheme.

- Afternoon Tea with entertainment - Thursday, 19 May, 1.30-4pm-16, MECA Swindon, providing an afternoon of live entertainment alongside lots of tea, coffee and cake!

Toby Kirk, chair of the Dementia Action Alliance and business development manager at Home Instead Swindon and Vale of White Horse, one of the many local businesses involved, said: “We care for our elderly clients within their own homes, many of whom are living with dementia.

"Our care professionals are trained to deliver specialist dementia care services, helping people to remain living in the comfort of their own homes, whilst also supporting the families of those affected.

"As dementia is an issue so ingrained in our everyday lives at Home Instead, we are passionate about spreading awareness of dementia and helping those families and friends affected by the disease. We are proud to be helping the Swindon Dementia Action Alliance in their mission to make our community more dementia-friendly by hosting these events, and encourage anyone who wants to know more about dementia or may be directly affected by it to come down and join us!”
