Swindon Police have had reports of a possible door-to-door scammer.
Officers believe there may be somebody operating in Blunsdon St Andrew, claiming to be in the antiques trade and trying to buy gold, jewellery or memorabilia from residents.
PCSO Lawrence Walker, from the local neighbourhood policing team, said: “We know that some vulnerable people within our community, particularly elderly people, may feel confused or intimidated by people who turn up at their door unannounced.
“We would urge everyone to be cautious when dealing with these types of cold-callers, and to also look out for neighbours, friends or relatives who might need to be reminded of our advice on how they can deal with these types of situations.”
The police advise:
- Most people who call at your home will be genuine, but sometimes people turn up unannounced with the intention of distracting you and tricking their way into your home to steal money or valuables or sell you something you do not want or need
- These types of people are often referred to as 'Nottingham Knockers', 'distraction burglars', 'bogus callers' or 'cold callers'
- People should never feel pressured into buying something on their doorstep, whether it is goods or a service and they are urged to contact the police if they feel threatened or intimidated
- If you have elderly or vulnerable neighbours it might be worth popping over to check they are okay if you have had cold callers visit your house
- An official visitor will always arrange an appointment with you beforehand and will not turn up unannounced
- Do not open the door to anyone you don't know or are not expecting and always check by using a spy-hole or look through a window
Anybody with concerns can report them by calling 101.
