Work is progressing on the Fleming Way improvement scheme in the centre of Swindon.
Swindon Borough Council says that throughout the project, a number of delays have been caused by utility companies, who have been unable to commit to a schedule or have undertaken work which has taken much longer to complete.
A council spokesperson said: "The final company to undertake work on site was Thames Water, and they are currently rerouting the water pipes under the road.
"With Thames Water now present, all the major utility work will be completed over the next few months. Once an old water pipe is removed, Openreach will complete a final piece of work to allow the new road to be built above it.
"Alongside Thames Water attending the site, the underpass between The Parade and the Tri-Centre has now been fully demolished after cabling was rerouted by Openreach.
"Replacing the underpass will pave the way for a pedestrian-friendly crossing providing a more welcoming route into the town centre from the train station. To do this, new paving and landscaping will be installed."
The project team recently visited a local tree nursery with representatives from the scheme’s contractor, Colas, to select the first of the semi-mature trees which will be planted.
A total of 173 new trees and over 23,000 plants will be planted and will include more than 100 mixed hedgerow bee-friendly plants, plus hundreds more shrubs which will also form part of the scheme’s drainage system. Work is progressing on the Fleming Way improvement scheme in the town centre.
