Swindon's newest Mayor had to be declared in a virtual ceremony due to the lockdown.

Cllr Garry Perkins was yesterday declared the new Mayor of Swindon.

Cllr Perkins is the first of Swindon’s many mayors to have been elected virtually, with Microsoft Teams acting as a makeshift council chamber.

Congratulations also to Cllr Brian Mattock who was elected Deputy Mayor.

A council spokesperson said: "A big thank you to outgoing Mayor Cllr Kevin Parry who managed to raise more than £35,000 for charity during his mayoral year.

"Due to social distancing rules, Cllr Perkins was unable to don the famous robe and chains for the meeting.

"He is, however, keen to start his mayoral duties as soon as he is able."
