Call for public to hand in guns and ammunition

Wiltshire Police are highlighting a national gun amnesty scheme.

Running until Sunday, 29 May, the firearm and ammunition amnesty means people can surrender items anonymously.
The police say people handing items over can do so secure in the knowledge that they will not face prosecution for illegal possession at the point of surrender.
The amnesty is described as an opportunity for members of the public to hand over weapons and ammunition which they have in their homes and wish to get rid of, but have not yet done so because they are worried about potential consequences.
Getting weapons away from private homes eliminates the risk of their ending up on the streets, perhaps by being stolen, and ultimately being used in crime.
In Swindon, items can be handed in at Gablecross, Shrivenham Road SN3 4RB. The police station is open from 8.30am to 5.30pm on weekdays and from 8.30am to 1pm on Saturdays.
Across the county, items can be handed in at police stations in Chippenham, Melksham, Trowbridge and Salisbury.
Members of the public who know of people involved in illegal firearms are asked to contact Wiltshire Police online by calling 101 or anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
