In conjunction with Clean Air Day (16 June) the GWH NHS Foundation Trust have released details of their carbon-emission-cutting Green Plan.

Clean Air Day is the UK's largest air pollution campaign, bringing together communities, businesses, schools and the health sector.

The World Health Organisation recognises that air pollution is the largest environmental health risk facing the world today, but the Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is on a mission to reduce the impact it has on the air, so that its staff, patients and visitors can breathe cleaner.

A spokesperson for the Trust said: "We monitor our nitrogen dioxide levels regularly, which have remained below WHO’s national requirements all year, and have introduced a number of sustainable plans to help reduce the local air pollution, including introducing a no idling campaign for cars waiting to collect patients."

The Trust’s Green Plan is also set to play its part in helping the NHS cut more than 1m tonnes of C02 emissions in the next three years – the equivalent of taking 520,000 cars off the road.

The plan is said to address the Trust's commitment to tackling climate change.

The spokesperson continues: "We are proud to set out the positive actions we will take to reduce our impact on the environment and safeguard the future health of our local communities."
