Former Swindon Borough Council Leader Cllr Jim Robbins has announced that he is stepping down as Swindon Labour & Co-operative Group Leader.

The move follows his appointment as General Secretary of the Co-operative Party, which currently has a political pact with Labour.
Announcing his decision on social media, Cllr Robbins said: "Leading Swindon Borough Council and the Labour & Co-operative Group over the last few years has been one of the greatest privileges of my life.
"Together, we've navigated some significant challenges, put the council on a firmer footing, championed investment in our town, supported major regeneration projects, and helped secure a devolution deal that has the potential to transform opportunities for Swindon and the wider Thames Valley.
"None of that was achieved by one person. It has been the result of the hard work of councillors, council staff, community organisations, local businesses and residents who care deeply about our town.
"While this new role is an extraordinary opportunity and a huge honour, I'm not going anywhere. I'll continue to represent Old Town and Lawn as a councillor and remain passionate about Swindon's future.
"The Co-operative Party has helped shape my views and my politics. I’m totally committed to the values and principles that they promote and it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take up the job when we have a Labour & Co-operative Prime Minister, Deputy PM, and more MPs, Cabinet Members and councillors than we have ever had before. The manifesto commitment to doubling the size of the co-operative sector is a huge opportunity and I’m determined to deliver on it!
"Thank you to everyone who has supported me over the years. It has genuinely meant a great deal.
"The best days for Swindon are still ahead of us."
