Swindon Borough Council's planning committee met on tuesday evening and gave outline planning permission for up to 2,500 homes to be built at Lotmead Farm, one of the proposed New Eastern Villages (NEV) sites.
Lotmead Farm, located on land between the A419 and the A420, will consist of Lotmead and Lower Lotmead village.
As well as the houses (including affordable housing), the planning permission allows for the construction of community buildings, shops, a sports hub, playing pitches, primary schools and other facilities.
Access will be created from the A420 and green infrastructure such as allotments and woodland will be incorporated.
The council will be expecting detailed applications to be submitted in due course.
Cllr Gary Sumner, the Cabinet Member responsible for delivering the NEV, said: “I am delighted that the Planning Committee last night gave the thumbs up to the outline plans for Lotmead.
"This is the largest of the proposed NEV villages and I look forward to receiving more detailed plans at a later date.”
