A driver with an expired MOT was arrested on suspicion of drug driving in Royal Wootton Bassett.

A police spokesperson said: "On Wednesday morning, roads policing officers were in the area when they spotted a Ford Transit being driven with what was believed to be an expired MOT.

"When officers stopped the driver to carry out enquiries, they quickly detected the smell of cannabis from the vehicle.

"A roadside drugs wipe was carried out which tested positive for cannabis.

"The driver, a man in his 20s from the Swindon area, was arrested on suspicion of drug driving and taken to Melksham custody.

"He has been released under investigation while enquiries continue."

News of the arrest comes amid the Wiltshire force's 'No Excuse' road safety campaign, which aims to crack down on the 'fatal offences most likely to cause serious or fatal collisions.

They are careless driving, drug driving, drink driving, excess speed, not wearing a seatbelt and using a mobile phone while driving.

The message of the campaign is that there are no excuses for any of these offences.
