John Lewis staff in Swindon are in redundancy limbo as bosses decide whether stores across the country will reopen.
The firm was reported in a national newspaper as considering making the closure of up to 10 branches permanent.
Swindon's - at Mannington Retail Park and the McArthur Designer Outlet - remain closed.
The company, part of the John Lewis Group which includes Watirose, insists that no decision has yet been made.
A spokesperson said: "The reality is that we have too much store space for the way people want to shop now, and we have shared this with our Partners.
"As difficult as it is, it is highly unlikely we will reopen all our John Lewis stores.
"However, no decision has been made and any details would be shared with Partners first by the middle of July."
