Work at Wanborough Road for the Redlands Grove housing development is ongoing and the contractor, Conlon Ltd has found Roman remains.

This news comes after Conlon asked Swindon Borough Council to provide an update on the works on their behalf.

The contractor found what is being described as significant Roman remains, such as an extended Roman trackway, on various areas of the site.

Archaeologists are said to be currently working with the contractor to document the extent of the finds.

The council say this means that Conlon is now looking to reopen the road in early November, but this may be extended depending what the archaeologists find.

The installation of new highway drainage, street lights and footpath construction is required on Wanborough Road as part of the new Redlands Grove housing development for the New Eastern Villages.

Conlon and other contractors have a legal right to do this work and the council says it appreciates residents are facing disruption as it happens.

A spokesperson for the council said: "We’d like to remind people that businesses in the area are still open, and a signed diversion is in place."
