A Swindon Police spokesperson said the force was alerted by the ambulance service shortly after 10.30pm and went to an address in Shalbourne Close.
The victim, who is in her 40s, was taken to Southmead Hospital in Bristol, where her condition is stable.
Police officers were at the scene overnight, carrying out detailed enquiries, and an appeal has been made for witnesses to come forward.
Detective Inspector Paul Hacker of Swindon CID said: “Our initial enquiries suggest that the victim was sitting outside her property when she was approached by a man who assaulted her and caused serious injuries to her hand.
“We believe these injuries were caused by some sort of blade.
“At this stage, we do not believe it was a random attack, so are carrying out detailed enquiries to understand a possible motive.
“We would urge anyone with information, including anyone who may have dash cam footage or private CCTV footage, to contact us immediately.”
No arrests have so far been made.
