Solar panels installed by Swindon residents through the council’s Solar Together scheme to date are expected to achieve a reduction of 11,853 tonnes of CO2 emissions over their 25-year lifetime.
Following three previous rounds of the scheme that began in 2022, 602 Swindon households have installed a total of 6,074 solar panels, with 91 per cent also opting to install a battery to maximise their use of self-generated electricity.
This, the council says, represents a combined investment of nearly £6m into renewable energy in Swindon.
So far over 440 Swindon households have registered for the latest 2025 Solar Together scheme. This marks a continued strong interest in the initiative, which is open for registrations until 8 August 2025.
Delivered in partnership with Wiltshire Council and iChoosr, an independent group purchasing provider, Solar Together offers residents a hassle-free way to begin powering their home through renewable energy.
Cllr Emma Bushell, Deputy Leader of Swindon Borough Council and Ambassador for a Greener Swindon, said: “Solar Together has already given hundreds of Swindon households the confidence and opportunity to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels, by buying solar panels at a competitive price.
"Installed solar panels can deliver energy to homes up to 20 times cheaper than energy from the grid, saving hundreds of pounds a year. Their switch to renewable energy will achieve a reduction of nearly 12,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions over the lifetime of their panels.
“With the latest 2025 Solar Together scheme open for registrations now, I’d encourage residents to take the time to consider if solar panels might be a smart move for them.
"There is a vast amount of information available on the Solar Together website to help make a well-informed decision. Over 400 households have already registered for free at www.solartogether.co.uk/swindon which takes just a few minutes.”
The scheme uses the collective power of group buying to secure competitive prices on solar panel systems and installation from pre-approved providers.
By joining together, households can access significantly better deals than they would typically find on their own on the open market. Last year’s Solar Together scheme locked in a 39 per cent discount on the typical market price.
Registering online is free and takes minutes, with no obligation to proceed and clear, personal recommendations provided to every household that registers.
The Solar Together website also features information the council says residents can trust, to help them make a well-informed decision on whether solar panels could be right for them.
To register for the scheme, residents must either own their own house or have permission from the landlord to install solar panels. Small and medium-sized enterprises and commonhold associations meeting this requirement can also participate.
For more information including likely costs and the amount of energy their individual households can expect to generate, residents should visit the Solar Together website or call iChoosr can call 0800 048 8113.
