Dr Peter Swinyard, of Phoenix Surgery, Toothill, Swindon, is retiring at the end of May 2020 after 40 years as a doctor, 35 years as a GP in West Swindon and 25 years at the Phoenix Surgery in Toothill, which he founded.

During his career, as well as providing a service to Swindon residents, he has been a leader of the profession in his role as National Chairman of the Family Doctor Association, working to improve health by the education of doctors and their teams and working with the governments of the day, influencing the direction of Health Policy, mostly behind the scenes.

For 29 years, he has been a representative of Swindon GPs on the Wiltshire Local Medical Committee, sometime chairman of the LMC.

“I shall really miss the interaction with patients”, said Dr Swinyard. “It has been an incredible privilege to get to know people and families over generations and to provide continuity of care in a system which is increasingly lacking in patient-centred medicine”.

“The last two years, after the take-over of the practice by Integral Medical Holdings (IMH) has been very difficult for patients and staff. Last November the Phoenix Surgery was taken under the wing of Park Lane Practice and the service to patients has improved since then. I wish the new regime great success in continuing the work which I started when I founded the practice in 1995”

“I would like to thank the amazing team at Phoenix Surgery and our patients for their support over the years”
