Work starts this month to enhance the pedestrian route from Swindon railway station into the Railway Village.

London Street and Sheppard Street will see the bulk of the £3m improvements, including:

- The pavement in front of the Carriage Works being widened, trees planted, and the space outside the Bristol Street tunnel improved with new railings and planting

- Additional trees being planted in Sheppard Street

- A pocket park created outside the Sheppard Street underpass, which links North Star with the town centre

- Both underpasses will see drainage improvements with a new creative lighting design for Sheppard Street underpass, making the space feel lighter and safer.

The work, funded by the Government's Towns Fund, is being undertaken by Fergal Contracting Co. Ltd. It starts on Monday 25 September and will continue until early 2024.

A Swindon Borough Council spokesperson said: "The road will remain open for the majority of the works, with night-time closures for resurfacing at the end of the project. The underpasses will also remain open for pedestrians and cyclists.
