The Swindon Punjabi Community Centre will be holding a day of celebrations and activities this month to mark Vaisakhi.
Vaisakhi is the holiest day in the Sikh calendar and the festival is celebrated by millions of Sikhs around the world each year.
Vaisakhi celebrates the values of respect and generosity for people of all faiths and creeds.
The holy day is a celebration of the creation of the Khalsa, and it was formed with aims of fighting oppression and upholding freedom and basic needs such as food, clothing, education and health for all people.
The Swindon Punjabi Community Centre will host a day of celebration on Saturday, 16 April from 10am.
This year, the family fun day will be an opportunity for Swindon to celebrate the British Sikh talent through spiritual music, art and martial arts as well as the highlight of the day - the turban tying competition.
In previous years the organising team said they have had people from all faiths and backgrounds don the turban and get involved in Vaisakhi celebrations.
One of the fun day organisers, Gurinder Singh, said: "As we have had to postpone the last two years due to the ongoing pandemic, everyone is extra excited for this year.
"We welcome people from all faiths, beliefs or those with no religion to enjoy, learn and celebrate together through a diverse range of colourful displays and engaging activities. The Swindon Gurdwara hopes it will be a joyous celebration for the whole local community. Happy Vaisakhi!"
Some of the activities on offer during the day of celebrations include:
- Sports day races
- Punjabi disco
- Ghattka (martial arts display)
- Tug of war competition
- Face painting
- Bouncy castle and inflatable activities
- Swindon Bhangra demonstration and more
