South Swindon Parish Council is seeking photos of civilian life in Swindon during World War Two. All photos received would then be printed and showcased around Queens Park and Town Gardens as part of its plans to mark the 75th Anniversary of VJ Day on 15th August. VJ Day was the official end of the Second World War, when Japan surrendered to the Allied Forces.

Showcasing these images will be one part of the Parish Council’s overall activities to mark VJ Day’s 75thAnniversary.

Other activities the Parish Council will be doing to mark the anniversary include a new commemorative mural on the wall overlooking Queens Park Lake and the unveiling of a new civilian themed WW2 memorial in the Peace Gardens of Queens Park.

Cllr John Firmin is the Chair of the Parish Council’s World Wars Working Party who are organising the VJ Day activities. He said: “We want to make VJ Day this year really special for all of Swindon to get behind.

"That is why the Parish Council is looking to do something different for VJ Day’s 75th Anniversary. As well as commemorating those who served at war we want our activities to focus on civilian life in Swindon during the war. Our new memorial statue that will be unveiled on VJ Day will be based on that theme and we would like to showcase as many photos as possible of civilian life during the war.

"We will then look to showcase these images in Town Gardens and Queens Park during August alongside images of armed forces personnel who were from Swindon which has kindly been shared with the Parish Council by local historians.

"If any residents think they have an image that fits this description and would be of interest please do share with the Parish Council by emailing online images at [email protected] or by arranging a visit to the Parish Council Office in Broadgreen for them to take a copy.

"As well as showcasing images of life in the Second World War and our new WW2 memorial, we will also be creating a commemorative mural on the wall overlooking Queens Park Lake.”
