More than 150 community heroes were welcomed to Steam for a special gathering.

Swindon Borough Council organised the Big Volunteer Thank You event at Steam, the Great Western Railway museum which doubles as a covid vaccination centre, and those invited included people who give up their time to aid the vaccine rollout there.

Also welcomed were volunteers in many other fields and from all walks of life, all of whom were praised for selflessly working to help others.

They included people who helped the Swindon Circles befriending service, the Local Heroes programme for vulnerable people, Active and Inclusive healthy exercise sessions, the Forget Me Not Cakes service for people who would otherwise not have a birthday cake and the Swindon Big Knit.

A council spokesperson said: "The celebration was organised to thank our volunteers for the amazing contribution they make to our community.

"All volunteers received a certificate and a Volunteer Swindon pin."
