The annual Wroughton Carnival provided the perfect opportunity for local residents to get out and enjoy the sunny weather this weekend.

The popular annual event returned for 2022 on Saturday, 9 July, on a bigger scale than ever.

Chair and Secretary of the Wroughton Carnival Committee, Beverley Margerison, said: "This year we saw the return of the parade as part of Wroughton Carnival. We'd like to say thank you to the Fox and Hounds and White Hart pubs, who kindly let us take over their car parks. 15 groups paraded around the village ending up at the entrance to the Weir Field on Devizes Road and additional thanks go to all the groups for making a fantastic effort.

There were more stalls than ever on the Weir Field, and we were treated to some great entertainment from a variety of bands, choirs and soloists who kindly gave their time for free. Danters provided the fun fair as usual, and it was great to have presence from SN Dogs, Wessex School of Arms and the Swindon School of  Gymnastics.

"The committee would like to thank everyone who was involved in whatever capacity and particularly the community of Wroughton for giving generously to the parade and entrance donations. This ensures that we can distribute the parade takings to local groups and ensures that we can run the carnival again next year. See you in 2023!"

The carnival's parade included participation from the following groups:

  • Emergency services (fire engine staff)
  • The Ridgeway School and Sixth Form College (who had students riding around on a Grease float as this will be the musical they will perform this year)
  • 10 Green Bottles
  • The Ellendune Entertainers
  • Wroughton Youth Football club
  • Swindon School of Gymnastics
  • The Wroughton Rainbows, Guides, Brownies and Scouts
  • Revolution Performing Arts
  • Wroughton Junior School
  • Swindon Lions Club
  • Britannia Majorettes and Miniettes of Swindon
  • Swindon Sea Cadets

After the parade made its way around the village, members of the public flocked to the Weir Field where there were stalls and entertainment on offer.

Individuals entering the gates were invited to leave a donation for the Wroughton Carnival Committee, to help the organisation retain its funding.

Swindon MP Sir Robert Buckland assisted Swindon 105.5's Shirley Ludford in giving out the prizes to the best groups who participated in the parade.

The Ridgeway School float received the runner's up second prize this year, with Wroughton Junior School's decades themed parade entry scooping up first prize.

There were food and drink stalls on the field, as well as funfair rides and games for families to enjoy.

Some of the local businesses and organisations who had stalls on the field included:

  • Mama's Sweet Treats & Fudge
  • Chloe's Petting Zoo
  • MS Society
  • Brighter Futures
  • Wroughton Ellendune Library
  • The Wroughton History Group
  • SN Dogs

In addition to the stalls, the Weir Field main stage area saw performances from Dave Woodford, What The Pluck, Ronstars, The Lost Hills, The Ellendune Entertainers Choir and We Are Unsupervised.

There was also a demonstration from the gymnasts from Swindon School of Gymnastics, and a sword-fighting demonstration from Wessex School of Arms.
