The Carnival Committee are looking for volunteers for the Wroughton Carnival event that is back this year, and bigger than ever.

The Wroughton Carnival Committee will be holding fundraising events in advance

The Wroughton Carnival will be taking place on Saturday, 9 July.

This year's event is said to be bigger and better than ever, so the Wroughton Carnival Committee are appealing for volunteers to help the day run smoothly.

In particular, the committee are looking for volunteers to help close the side roads around the village as the parade procession travels on its route.

The parade will run from the Fox and the Hounds pub at around 1pm, and disperse around the Weir Field after an hour of travelling around the village.

The road closures will run on a rolling basis and will open as soon as the procession has moved on.

Volunteers are also needed to collect entry donations from members of the public at the gates that will be set up on the Weir Field.

Beverley Margerison, Chair and Secretary of the Wroughton Carnival Committee, said: "The Wroughton Carnival has been running for many years - I think when it started back in the early 20th century it was known under a different name.

"It is always a great local event and this year, the Wroughton Carnival Committee could really do with some more volunteers. We have lots going on for 2022 and would really appreciate any extra help people could offer."

The Wroughton Carnival Committee will be asking attendees to donate anything they can spare on the day, instead of charging a flat entry fee.

Around 50 stalls will be set up on the Weir Field, and they will be available to the public from 12pm.

As well as the stalls, there will be:

  • A wide range of food vendors (including a curry stall from the representatives of the Swindon Hindu Temple)
  • Static exhibits
  • A dog show
  • Live music
  • Entertainers
  • Sword fighting display
  • Visits from the emergency services and their vehicles
  • A static engines display
  • A funfair
  • Gymnastics display
  • Choir performances

Those interested in volunteering for the event can contact Beverley Margerison on 07824398516, or via email at [email protected].

The Wroughton Carnival Committee will also be holding some fundraising events in the lead up to the Carnival event.

There will be a Darts 'Blind Pairs' competition at the Wroughton Club on 4 July at 8.30pm. Attendees can register on the day - as long as it is done by 8.15pm or in advance through the Club.

Entrance for the competition will be £3 per player and there will be individual trophies for the winner and runners up.

The committee will also be holding a crib singles competition at the Wroughton Club on 4 July at 8pm. Individuals can register on the day - as long as it is done by 7.45pm - or in advance through the Club.

Entrance for the competition will be £2 per player and there will be trophies for the winner and runners up.

All entry monies from both events will be donated to the Wroughton Carnival Fund.

Those interested in these fundraising events can contact the Wroughton Club on 01793 812 319 or call Dean Perrett on 07497 8744615, for more information.
