A local photographer is gearing up for a momentous bike ride to raise money in memory of his late mother Vanessa Hobbs, 38.
Thomas Hobbs will be taking on the length of Great Britain from Land's End to John o'Groats in a bid to give back to the charities which supported his mother, and family, during her final months. Thom, through his page 'A Journey Ineffable', is aiming to raise more than £3,000, with the total sum then distributed between Prospect Hospice and Macmillan Cancer Support. So far he has raised over £1,000. Explaining the idea behind the ride, Thom said: "Land's End to John o'Groats is an iconic cycling route - the cycling equivalent of the London Marathon - and it's something I've wanted to achieve for quite a few years. "Cycling has always been a way for me to escape from suburban life and the monotony of the nine to five working day. It allows me to escape to a place in my mind that's just me - no distractions - and has been an outlet for my thoughts, frustrations, and healing process. "My mother passed away in Prospect Hospice's care - through cycling I hope to reimburse the charities for what they have done for me and my family. I'll use the ride to reflect and unwind in a way." Thom will be setting off on his journey next month, 16 May, and since his fundraising began last year he has received support from local businesses and groups. Thom said: "I've been working alongside Dennis Hedges, 85, who's a well known cyclist in Swindon and he's also done a lot of charity and volunteer work through cycling - he's been acting a lot like a mentor." "Swindon Cycles also helped me out with the bike by giving me a generous discount off it, and the team behind Darkroom Espresso Cycling Club have assisted me with designing the jersey I will be wearing on the ride - the jerseys can be purchased from Darkroom Espresso." Thom will be cycling from Land's End to John o'Groats from 16 May to 30 May. To follow A Journey Ineffable, and to donate, visit his Facebook, Instagram, or My Donate pages.
