Police are asking for help to trace two drivers who lead them on a car chase through Swindon town centre - running red lights and breaking speed limits - before abandoning their vehicles and evading a helicopter and dog search.

Officers had been called to reports of an orange VW Gold and silver Ford Mondeo being driven erratically through Pinehurst at about 1.40am on Saturday 22 July.

And after being given permission to pursue the offenders, were led on a five-minute chase through the town which ended when the Mondeo crashed into a concrete barrier on Liden Avenue - the male driver running off. The other vehicle, a VW Golf, was later found abandoned near Liddington Street.

Despite a search involving a police helicopter and dog unit both drivers were able to evade police.

PC Ben Agate said: "I'd like to hear from anyone who has information relating to drivers who may have been using the vehicles at the time. These cars were driven dangerously, exceeding the speed limits and going through red traffic lights.
"Both were uninsured and I strongly suspected that they were driven by teenagers who do not hold a driving licence. Luckily no one was hurt during the pursuit.
"I believe that someone in the local community knows who were driving these vehicles at the time they failed to stop for police.”

If you have any information please contact Wiltshire Police on 101 or contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where information can be left anonymously.
