The busy sewing bees of Poppydown Quilters have applied their skills to helping women recovering from breast surgery and mastectomies.

Their quilted colourful cushions presented to Great Western Hospital relieve the pressure on sore areas when sitting, in bed or wearing a seat belt.

Group member Sheila Panther said: “I came across the cushions over a year ago and the GWH Breast Cancer Unit welcomed the idea. Group members were keen to be involved in the good cause as they all knew somebody who had had a procedure; they designed and made some brilliant cushions.”

Chloe Thomas, community and events fundraiser at GWH Brighter Futures, visited the group in early November to collect 22 cushions. She said: “I didn’t really know what to expect, but they’re really stunning.”

Members of the group also helped mark the 175th anniversary of the founding of modern Swindon by creating a unique piece of work which took about five weeks to complete.

It was presented to Swindon 175 project manager Caroline Black and Ian Surtees of Steam Museum.

Group treasurer Irene McGough said: “We wanted the quilt to reflect the colours of GWR and we ended up sourcing the fabrics we needed from a wide variety of places. It was quite a challenge.”
