Based in the pictureque and rural Wiltshire countryside, when approaching the grand building it was hard to believe that I was still in a Swindon postcode. It was easy to understand why this would make such an attractive wedding venue - but on this particular visit I was just there for some dinner.

As you enter there's an apparent blend of modernism and classic features throughout the interior, maintaining orginal features of the grade II listed building. Built circa 1821 the house still boasts a certain sense of grandeur.

The restaurant's menu depends on the season, and on the winter/autumn menu I went for the pork - granted not my usual choice, but it came recommended - accompanied by roasted new potatoes and a bed of vegetables. Subject to opinion but I was happy that the vegetables had some crunch which then didn't liquify with the creamy gravy, and the pork was nice and tender.

Opting for the strawberry cheese cake I was amazed at how generous the portion was - luckily it was delicious, and the fresh stawberries were a nice touch which added some extra flavour and texture to the dish.

There can often be a big divide with what is expected from service. For me, the staff were brilliant - not fussing over you, but should you want some extra veg, gravy, or more refreshments, they returned promptly. Very friendly service.

I would happily return to Chiseldon House and would be keen to spend a bit more time there.
