Members of the public are being invited to share their views to help Swindon Borough Council to choose where best to site homes and businesses in years to come.

The consultation, which starts today, will help the council refresh its Local Plan, which sets out how much housing Swindon needs over a 20-year period and identifies where, when and how development will take place.

The current Local Plan runs to 2026 but needs to be updated to plan ahead to 2036.

Additional new policies are also being proposed for the Local Plan. These include policies to protect air quality and to meet the accommodation needs of an ageing population.

Councillor Gary Sumner, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning, said: “I would urge members of the public to use this opportunity to contribute to the Local Plan.

“It’s vital that this document is reviewed regularly so we can be sure that the building of future housing developments does not come at the expense of the people who already live here.

“Due to a number of large strategic housing sites coming closer to fruition, which have already been allocated, we are now only seeking land for an additional 1,000 homes over the entire plan period to 2036.”

The consultation runs until 23 September and can be viewed by logging on to www.swindon.gov.uk and clicking on the icon labelled ‘Consultations, Engagement and Surveys’.
