A 16-year-old male has been arrested on suspicion of burglary after he was caught riding on a stolen mobility scooter in Freshbrook, Swindon.

Police were called to the Wakefield Close area at approximately 2.30am this morning (18 January) to a report that two males had been seen acting suspiciously and looking over fences. They were then seen on two mobility scooters in the area.

The information was passed to officers in the area who swiftly located the two males in Rowton Heath Way – both made off on foot. One of the males was located and detained by officers. He was arrested on suspicion of burglary and when taken to custody, was searched and found in possession of a number of tools and a knife.

He was further arrested on suspicion of being in possession of a bladed article in a public place and going equipped.

South Community Policing Team Sergeant Neil Bott said: “This theft would have no doubt had a really big impact on the victim who is aged in his 60s and a double amputee, and therefore relies on his scooters to get out and about. This mindless theft would have been really upsetting, so I am pleased that we were able to swiftly locate the scooters and return them to the owner.

“We currently have one male in custody in relation to the incident and enquiries are ongoing to locate the second person involved.

“Anyone with information should call police on 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
