Swindon Croquet Club’s level play team were beaten 13 - 7, playing away in murky conditions, by Camerton and Peasedown in their final league match of the season.
Having braved torrential rain on the journey from Swindon, the match began in damp and overcast conditions.
The first of four rounds saw Camerton and Peasedown take a 3 - 1 lead with the visitors initially finding some difficulty in adapting to slow lawns which no doubt had been affected by the earlier heavy rain.
The second round followed the same pattern leaving Swindon, worryingly, on the wrong end of a 6 - 2 scoreline.
The third round of games brought a small improvement from the Swindon players, losing the round 4 - 2. This left the home side with an unassailable lead of 10 - 4 at the lunch break with Swindon needing to win the final round 6 - 0 to force a draw, a most daunting task. The Swindon team took up the challenge with gusto but could only manage a 3 - 3 draw in the final round. Swindon's top scorer was Tony Mayer who won all 3 of his singles games.
In spite of the defeat, Swindon captain Terry Clements was fairly upbeat after the defeat saying “Camerton played well and deserved their win and we were a little below par. However, with 8 of the games finishing with a 7 - 6 scoreline, the final outcome could have been quite different".
With new players being blooded in the last 3 matches Swindon Croquet Club is confident of challenging for honours next season.
