Wheelchair Rugby League is back with a bang in Swindon following an open evening held by Swindon St George.

Coach Tony Ellis hailed the gathering as a huge success, saying: "We are seeing a huge surge in popularity of our unique form of RL, and that is reflected in the marvellous turn out we have here tonight."

The event was staged at the New College Sports Hall off Queens Drive and attracted a mix of seasoned players and newcomers, some of whom had never even heard of this form of Rugby League before.

Mr Ellis, having first taken the new recruits through the format and rules of the discipline, then introduced some basic drills in order to acclimatise them to the demands of the sport, moved on to organising a 15-minute session under actual playing conditions.

This meant that raw rookies, having arrived not knowing a thing about the game, were within two hours actually playing and enjoying Wheelchair Rugby League.

The two-hour sessions will resume on 23 November at 8pm and continue every Thursday from that date. Men, women, boys and girls, whether able-bodied or regular wheelchair users are welcome, and their first try-out visit will be absolutely free.
