The STFC6 Football Programme run by Swindon Town FC has earned treble champion status.

The programme, led by Swindon Town FC Community Foundation, aims to give students the chance to gain a full-range of A-Level and Vocational qualifications.

Students are also granted the opportunity to train with professional coaches, gain coaching qualifications, and compete against other professional football clubs from around the country.

A spokesperson for STFC said: "Since the programme’s formation, in 2016, the programme has gone from strength to strength, winning a total of 11 trophies. This was continued into the 2021/22 season with the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd men’s teams completing the treble, by becoming champions of the CEFA (Community and Education Football Alliance) Men’s South West League one, two and three."

This achievement was made even more impressive by the fact that the squad’s season was very much interrupted and affected by the covid-19 pandemic, not allowing the teams to train together and gain match fitness for large spells of the season.

The football club said teams overcame this adversity by maintaining their fitness throughout lockdown and continuing their good form after the return of football was granted.

Assistant Head of Foundation and First Team manager, Shane Hewlett said: “We’re absolutely delighted to be league champions on three fronts this season, in what has been such a challenging year for everyone, and the lads success this season is testament to all the hard work they put in, on and off the pitch, particularly when are season was forced to stop, as a result of the lockdown, they worked hard over that period to maintain their fitness so that when we did return, they could hit the ground running, and they certainly did that!

"As a Foundation, we’re so proud to be able offer students the opportunity to play a high level of football, at our state of the art facility here at Foundation Park, while also gaining A-level or Vocational qualifications at the Commonweal School, and we hope to see this success continue long into the future.”

Lead Community Development Officer and Second Team Manager Mitchell Coombs said: “It has been a very difficult stop, start season and that can impact all players mentally and physically.

"But credit where credit is due, the players came together stronger, to help each other compete at the highest levels by completing the season undefeated winning all of their games and winning the league. This has made this season a huge success and all of the players should be proud of themselves for what they have achieved.”
