A rugby match report from Barrie Matthews.
The masters served up a cracker to close the 2022 Rugby League Season in Swindon.
Rugby League in Swindon came to a close for the 2022 season this weekend – and it certainly didn’t go out with a whimper.
High flying Cardiff Blue Dragons came to town for the final Masters RL game of the year at St George. They arrived boasting a line-up bristling with internationals but met with a fiercely resistant Swindon side who were determined to stand up to their opponents.
Waves of Welsh attacks were repelled by the home team’s well organised and aggressive defence, in between chances carved out by St George themselves. Tries were scored at either end but, true to the tradition and spirit of RL Masters, the final score was declared as 0-0.
Swindon chairman (and man of the match) Warren Huggins was delighted with his side’s performance.
He said: "It was a really heart-warming show from our boys and the improvement in everyone through the course of the season is really encouraging.
"So many people have contributed with help this year and we thank each and every one of them, but I must give a special mention to Nikki at the Queen’s Tap on Station Road in Swindon, who has provided us with delicious after-match food this season.
"The tasty curry and chilli dishes they have served up have been much appreciated by all players, both home and away. They certainly come with the recommendation of everyone at St George."
St George RL Masters now face a break of a few weeks before their final outing away at Aldershot and Fleet.
