Staff at the Swindon offices of Be Wiser Insurance are celebrating the first anniversary since opening.

The new venture, based at Edison Park, was launched in 2016 by Financial Director Andy Dunkerley and Robert Buckland, the MP for South Swindon, and will create more than 300 job opportunities in the town over the next few years.

Retired police officer, 56 year old Russell Toohey from Swindon, joined Be Wiser ten months ago and says he’s adapted well to his new role. “I spent 30 years in the police force but felt I was too young to sit around doing nothing after I left. I have a strong work ethic and this job suits me as it has good prospects.”

Be Wiser is one of the UK’s biggest privately owned insurance brokers and is offering local people of all ages job opportunities with excellent promotion prospects and training.

“Full time staff start on a salary of £18,000 with a 5% pay rise year on year,” said Chief Operating Officer, Richard Smith. “We also offer part time, weekend and evening work and there are lots of chances to progress within the business if you are motivated. We want people to build a successful career with us.”

Former Costa Coffee store manager, 33 year old David Offler, had only been at Be Wiser for a month when he was offered his dream job within the company.

“I wanted a complete change of direction,” he said. “I was interested in Be Wiser as they have good expansion plans and after four weeks as an insurance consultant a training opportunity came up. I hope to be involved in putting together the training team and managing it. There are lots of opportunities here for people who have the drive and commitment.”

Professional development is at the heart of every job within Be Wiser whether those joining have just left school, have taken a career break to have children, or have decided to change their career path.

“Young people who have just left school or college but didn’t excel can join us here at Be Wiser and earn a salary and study for their professional insurance qualifications,” said Richard Smith. “We also run management courses and we offer everyone two hours online training a week. This could be related to their job or perhaps something that interests them, like mindfulness, which will not only benefit them at work but in their personal life too.”

Beth Brown from Swindon has been working at Be Wiser for ten months. She started in the customer call centre before being promoted to be a trainer. Alongside her work she is also doing a fast track apprenticeship.

“I am studying for my maths and English,” said 29 year old Beth. “Once I am qualified I will have a Chartered Insurance Institute qualification. I am really enjoying my role and all the opportunities available.”
