Amber Phelps has always wanted to work with children, initially as a primary school teacher but then, after a visit to Norland College, decided that she wanted to become a nanny. Swindon College offered an Early Years course, which she excelled at. Amber had concerns about taking an exam but she needn’t have worried as she came out with a D* (Distinction *).
Amber’s concerns were grounded on past experience, when throughout her school life, Amber has had to deal with dyslexia, finding solutions to help her get on with her work. Swindon College tutors have been accommodating with this, ensuring that she can have presentations and printed material on the right coloured paper to help her amongst other things. Amber is a very enthusiastic student, positive in the face of problems. She says the tutors and facilities are great and has learnt a lot on the course. In 2017, Amber won Student of The Year in her subject area and is pictured receiving the award from Dawn Lucas, Head of Learning.
Amber has now been offered a conditional place at Norland College which will involve 3 years of study followed by a year in a family as a Newly Qualified Nanny to achieve her Norland Diploma and the title ‘Norland Nanny’. If all goes smoothly, Amber could eventually see herself placed with a family anywhere in the world. In the meantime, Amber needs to complete her final assignments to get the required grades to make that conditional place a firm offer, and she is working hard towards this.
