At a ceremony last week, Swindon Council’s Public Power Solutions won the national Waste award.

Public Power Solutions Limited (PPS), the wholly-owned company of Swindon Borough Council, has been named co-winner of the coveted PEEL People’s Cup, which recognises team excellence in the operation of licensed or permitted waste facilities.

The cup has been awarded as part of the Chartered Institution of Waste Management’s (CIWM) Sustainability & Resource Awards 2017, which showcase the best in sustainable practices, technology innovation, behaviour change and professional achievement.

PPS’s Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) and Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) facility opened in 2014 at the company’s headquarters in Cheney Manor. The Waste Solutions part of the business operates the HWRC on behalf of the council and manages the UK’s first SRF plant to use residual municipal waste as its primary feedstock, diverting 75-80% of waste from landfill.

Sean Magee, Head of Waste Solutions, Public Power Solutions, said: “PPS is very pleased to have won this prestigious national award which recognises the excellent teamwork which goes to ensure the recycling centre and SRF facility run smoothly, delivering a cost-effective and sustainable solution to processing waste for Swindon’s residents."

Chris Murphy, CIWM Deputy chief executive, added: “One of CIWM’s aims is to share best practice and professional standards across the sector and we were impressed by the excellent management approach and teamwork at Public Power Solutions’ facility, as well as the robust approach to Health and Safety.

"The company is also clearly dedicated to promoting the skills and career development of its staff and they are a worthy winner of this year’s PEEL People’s Cup.”

The awards were presented on Thursday at a lunch event at Marriott Grosvenor Square, London, hosted by stand-up comedian, TV personality and comedy writer Jo Caulfield.
