Swindon’s Curtis Cole and Steven Hellis put on a fabulous performance to narrowly miss out on becoming American Golf 9 Hole Champions.

The pair, both members at Wrag Barn Golf Club, took on qualifiers from all over the U.K. and Ireland across three days of golf before eventually finishing in third place.

Cole and Hellis were placed first as they went into the semi-finals, so losing out on a place in the final was disappointing even though they clearly enjoyed the experience.

Cole said: “We’re ecstatic to have come 3rd, but it hurt.  To get to the last 42 to come here and then the last four to play in the semi finals is just unbelievable.

"Both pairs played pretty well. There was a lot of birdies! No halves really. It was just wins so it was a really good game.”

After the tournament came to it conclusion, Daniel Gathercole, Director of Marketing and Communications at American Golf said: “We’ve really championed 9 Hole golf at American Golf as a great way to get more people hitting balls more often.

"So to now see our 9 Hole championships be taken so seriously and to see all the drama of the tournament to play out gives me great pleasure.

"I can only thank all the competitors over the past 3 days who have given everything to the competition and done so with smiles on their faces.”

Steven Hellis added: “What American Golf has put on over the last few days and back at Cumberwell where we qualified has been incredible.

"Well, what an experience? It’s such a good event! You get a taste of the Pro life really, it’s really nice.”

All of the Championship finals will be shown on Sky Sports across October and November. The American Golf Events series is a vital part of American Golf’s drive to get more people out playing golf more often.

In its fourth year, the Championships go from strength to strength and with the quality of golf and personality on show through this year’s qualifiers and finals, golf with American Golf has a very bright future.
