Primary school pupils from Swindon schools enjoyed their own version of the World Cup when they took part in Nova Hreod Academy’s first primary school football tournament.

Teams from Moredon Primary School, Bridlewood Primary School, Even Swindon Primary School and Rodbourne Cheney Primary School played against each other in a series of tightly fought 5-a-side matches. The two teams from Even Swindon Primary both won their semi-finals, resulting in an Even Swindon head-to-head in the final. Moredon and Bridlewood faced each other in the playoff for third place, which was claimed by Moredon Primary.

The competition was organised as part of Nova’s primary liaison programme, which is designed to introduce Year 5 pupils to Nova to help with their transition to secondary school. The match officials were Year 10 Nova sports leaders, who have chosen GCSE and BTEC PE as one of their options.

Richard Smith, sports coach at Nova Hreod Academy, who organised the competition, said: “We were very impressed by the high standard of sportsmanship and enthusiasm from all the players, and we look forward to welcoming them back next year to challenge Even Swindon Primary for the title.”

Janine Mason, Head of PE at Nova Hreod Academy, said: the primary football tournament was a huge success. We’ve seen some fantastic football today and we are already looking forward to those students joining Nova Hreod and representing Nova as a collective team.
