Members of Swindon’s Muslim community are preparing for Ramadan - one of the most important events in their religious calendar.

Ramadan, which begins tonight, is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to Muhammad according to Islamic belief. Observance of Ramadan (fasting) is regarded as one of the five pillars of Islam - the others being faith, prayer, charity and pilgrimage to Mecca.

Adult Muslims refrain from eating or drinking from sunrise to sunset with exceptions being made for those who are elderly, travelling, pregnant, or in poor health.

Ramadan will begin tonight and end on the evening of Thursday June 14.
