Homeless people in Swindon enjoyed cooked breakfasts for four days this winter thanks to support from building company Taylor Wimpey.

The developer donated to Big Breakfast +, based at St Luke’s Church Hall in Broad Street, to fund four days of breakfasts during December. During the days sponsored by Taylor Wimpey, a total number of 77 breakfasts were served, ranging from 25 on the busiest day to 11 on the quietest, helping 45 different individuals.

Rosemary Curtis, community fundraiser, trustee and honorary secretary of Big Breakfast +, says: “We provide a cooked breakfast to homeless people – or those without access to cooking facilities – Monday to Saturday throughout the year except for three days over Christmas when Christmas Care in Swindon is available.

"It’s a never-ending job to find the money to fund each day and each week, so a donation like this really makes a difference. It’s really delightful when we get a cheque through the post that we weren’t expecting. It’s so encouraging.”

Each breakfast offered by Big Breakfast + includes a full traditional cooked breakfast, plus toast, cereal and a hot drink.

Rosemary added: “Our focus is on providing a nutritious meal at the start of the day, which is particularly important if people have spent the night on the street. But we also provide somewhere warm to come, and our clients can also access services from other organisations which use the hall as a safe environment to engage with users.

"We receive very positive feedback not just from the service users themselves but from outreach workers from other organisations.”

Mark Edmonds, Managing Director for Taylor Wimpey, says: “We are committed to supporting the communities in which we build our new homes and this is a great example of the way we can help local charities and good causes."

Big Breakfast + is a fantastic organisation which provides an incredibly valuable service for local people who are homeless or living in accommodation where they are unable to cook meals for themselves, and we were pleased to be able to offer our assistance.”

Now in its 24th year, Big Breakfast + runs a sponsor breakfast campaign in which individuals or organisations are invited to sponsor a day’s worth of breakfasts. More information is available by clicking here.
