Families in Wiltshire are being asked to look out for one of the UK’s most striking butterflies this summer. The Red Admiral had one of its best ever years in 2017, seeing its numbers rise across the UK by 75% compared to 2016 and with more being seen in Wiltshire last year than ever before. Wildlife charity Butterfly Conservation (BC) is inviting people of all ages to discover the Red Admiral for themselves at a free butterfly day in the Orchard of Iford Manor near Bradford-on-Avon. The event on Sunday 1 July will run from midday until 4pm and experts from BC’s Wiltshire Branch will be on hand throughout the day to take families on guided butterfly walks. Chair of Wiltshire’s BC Branch, Hugo Brooke, said: “This year is quite different to last year when you think of the snow we experienced during the spring, so we are keen to find out how the Red Admiral is doing. “The butterfly is really easy to spot with its distinctive red, black and white markings, so it would be brilliant if people could tell us if they see one and record their sightings on our free iRecord Butterflies app. “The event at Iford Manor is a great chance for us to improve people’s butterfly identification skills and to get more children caring about wildlife.” Visitors will also have the opportunity to see moth trap displays and use infra-red cameras to see the resident bat roost. There will be face-painting, music, arts and crafts, story-telling, cream teas and families are encouraged to bring a picnic to enjoy on the river bank.
