Two men have been arrested on suspicion of the theft of a caravan following positive work by the Wiltshire Intelligence Unit and the Community Tasking Team.

The caravan was stolen from paddocks in Purton overnight between 4.30pm on January 1 and 9am on 2 January after it is believed a vehicle was rammed through metal gates to the private yard to access the caravan.

Yesterday, officers attended a travellers site just outside of Swindon and located the stolen caravan, which has now been returned to its owner.

Two men, both aged 18, were seen trying to escape from the windows of the caravan. They were arrested by officers and taken to Melksham custody.

They have since been released under investigation while enquiries continue.

North Wiltshire Community Policing Team Inspector Mark Luffman said: “As a result of the proactive work that has been taking place within our intelligence unit and CTT, we were able to locate the stolen caravan, return it to its grateful owner, and arrest two people.

“They have been released under investigation while our enquiries continue into the theft.

“We have seen a number of caravan thefts in Wiltshire in recent weeks and we understand that these thefts can have a real impact on the victims – many of the caravans stolen are worth a lot of money. We continue to advice owners to fit security devices to their vehicles to protect them from theft or break-ins.

“Please also be vigilant – if you see or hear anyone acting suspiciously within your neighbourhood or near caravans, please call 101. If a crime is in progress, call 999."
