A ROSE FOR LYDIARD PARK- by Sidney Ball.
One of the most interesting of the St.John ladies is
Johanna of the 17th Century. She was the wife of Sir Walter
St. John, the third Baronet. Johanna was a St. John before
and after her marriage, for she was of the family of the
Bedfordshire St.Johns; she and Sir Walter were distant cousins
Sir Walter and Lady Johanna had a big house at
Battersea, as well as Lydiard Park. They divided their time
between the two mansions. At Lydiard their trusted estate
steward was Thomas Hardyman. When living at Battersea,
Sir Walter and Lady Johanna wrote often to Mr. Hardyman
about the management of the Lydiard Park estate. SWINDO "
In one of her letters to Mr. Hardyman, Lady Johanna
wrote that she was going to send some slips of the Austrian
rose for planting at Lydiard Park. This letter was written GLASS

Peter Beales, one of the foremost growers of, and OKUS ROAD,
experts on roses, recently published a book called "Classic
Roses". In his book Peter Beales describes the rose as
"Austrian Briar" or "Austrian Yellow" - Rosa foetida. It has SWINDON. ^±:
"large single flowers of rich golden yellow with prominent
stamens produced in early June". Peter Beales also lists this TELSw. 615262 '. ,1"
"old fashioned" or "classic" rose in his catalogue. yt
