gloves, sweets and stationery. Funding for the boxes came from a
collection after the school's annual pre-Christmas production.
The organisation undertakes lifesaving work in war-torn areas of
Eastern Europe and at Christmas it delivers wrapped shoeboxes to the
most desperate children.
The youngsters enjoyed getting involved. Rachel Webb, 10, said, "we
get lots of presents to open and these children get nothing, I thought it
was really important we helped them have some fun."
Alex Jones, 6, added "it was good, all my friends did it too. I put a
pencil, a small book, sweets and a little bear in my box."
Children In Distress aimed to have sent over 125,000 boxes by the end
of Christmas 1999.
